A Trip in The Time Machine

There’s nothing better than cool, breezy nights and clear skies in Charlotte. As I walked up the gently lit walkway to Dupp & Swat, the feeling of dopeness was in the air. The faint sound of old school hip-hop graced my ears as I walked by several shops of creatives doing what they do best. Create. Anticipating the layout of The Time Machine event, I couldn’t wait to see how the Public Interest crew brought back the 90’s. And boy, they didn’t disappoint.
If you haven’t heard of Public Interest yet, you have been missing out. Vintage goods are all the hype now, and it’s hard to find a crew that’s not obsessed with themselves or their products. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Jess and Josh of Public Interest over the last few months, and to watch their passion of dope nostalgic clothing is truly inspiring. Their humbleness and thoughtfulness to create lasting experiences is what sets them apart from their competition. They aren’t bigger than the products that they sell, and they put themselves in the shoes of vintage fashion enthusiast. Partly because they are enthusiasts, and their care and passion for fashion shows in the way they conduct business.
As I walked into the event, customers were all over the clothing racks and admiring the retro artwork that covered the walls. While the crew was talking to customers, I walked around the art filled room and checked out all the old school posters and vintage tees that lined the shop. As I casually looking around, I bumped into a vendor selling mixed drinks in a Capri-Sun pouch and I had to have one.
While sipping on my “juice”, the room finally slowed down for a little and I was greeted with smiles and hugs from Jess and Josh. They both thanked me for stopping by and walked me around the room telling me all about each piece they had available and the inspiration behind it. From the old school jerseys, Dick Tracy tees and pillows (yes, pillows), they had the vibe on lock with a cherry on top by having Anna Gelbach in the room making custom shoes. Needless to say, I felt welcomed. I had the sense of being home away from home, in a room filled with good music, dope art, and even doper clothes. The feeling of being too cool for school is the simplest way I can describe it, and a feeling that will have me coming back for more.
Experiences are what keep customers coming back for more. Rather it’s great customer service or how a product makes you feel, whatever that experience is what makes a brand a living entity. Jess and Josh made vintage come alive at The Time Machine event, and left a lasting impression on everyone that stopped by.
Next time Public Interest has an event, stop by to get an old school, cool kids club experience like no other. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
